In the heart of Afghanistan, where the wounds of over 40 years of conflicts have never healed and the echoes of bombs resonate among the mountains, quietly spreads an epidemic that often goes unnoticed:
drug addiction.
Within the walls of “Ibn Sina Drug Addiction Treatment Hospital”, Kabul’s largest drug rehabilitation center, a unique group of individuals seeks solace and treatment for their drug dependency.
The United Nations reports that Afghanistan harbors nearly four million drug users, amounting to almost 10% of the entire population.
When they were in power from 1996 to 2001, the fundamentalists had banned poppy cultivation.
However, the intervention of US-led forces in 2001 led to the resurgence of opium production.
The Taliban now claim they want to eradicate the use of narcotics.
There are four thousands hospitalized souls here, that come from all walks of life, their stories as diverse as the nation itself. Some are victims of the harsh realities of war, using mostly heroin and methamphetamine to alleviate the pain of loss and trauma.

Others have fallen prey to the allure of escape, seeking temporary relief from the relentless difficulties of poverty and uncertainty.

Despite the stigma associated with addiction in Afghan society, these individuals find refuge within the confines of hospital walls.

Here, they are not judged for their struggles but rather welcomed and listened to with compassion and understanding by healthcare professionals dedicated to their recovery.

Within this microcosm of hope amidst despair, bonds form among the patients as they navigate the challenging journey towards sobriety together.

Amidst the chaos of their surroundings, they find moments of clarity and connection, supporting each other through the darkest of times.

However, the road to recovery is fraught with obstacles.

Resources are scarce, and the specter of relapse looms large. Despite these challenges, however, Afghanistan's addicted persevere, fueled by a glimmer of hope for a better tomorrow and the unwavering support of those who stand beside them in their fight for redemption.
